12 Successful Interview tips

  1. Greet with a friendly smile and good eye contact
  2. Offer a firm handshake (but not crushing)
  3. Research the company website before your interview.
  4. Arrive early, neatly groomed with hair combed & fresh breath.
  5. Avoid tapping fingers, nervous gestures, coffee or chewing gum/mints
  6. Fill out the application in it's entirity (even if it is the 5th time that day.)

  4. What do you enjoy most about working for XYZ company?
  5. How many people are currently employed here?
  6. How long has the company been in business?

Answers to Prepare Ahead

  1. Tell me more about yourself.  Stick to business, emphasizing skills and experiences that relate to business.
  2. Where do you see yourself in a year?  Learning more about the industry for future growth. What are your career goals?  Show interest in growth by relating to current position, (avoid appearing so focused on advancement that you fail to appreciate the job at hand).
  3. Why did you leaveyour last job?  Be careful not to vent negative feelings that make you appear difficult.  Use positive phrases like seeking growth rather than not promoted. Ask us for help!
  4. Questions you do not know the answers to.  Don't guess.  Show initiative, motivation and willingness to get the answer, and tell them you will get back to them.

Professional Demeanor

  1. Your body language is just as important as your verbal language.  In fact, approximately 55% of your communication skills are non-verbal (including body signals);  38% are in expression, pitch and tone; only 7% come from actual words you use.

  2. Sit up straight, lean slightly forward and avoid tilting your head or propping yourself.

  3. Present an impressive first impressionfrom start to finish, a firm handshake, good eye contact and a positive attitude.  

  4. If you have a coat, take it off and fold it over the chair. Leave purse or brief case on the floor.


Wardrobe Tips

  1. It is better to be overdressed than too casual. (Suit preferred)

  2. If possible, investigate what is proper attire for that company before interviewing.

  3. Clothes must always be clean and pressed, shoes polished, hair clean and combed in a flattering style, and nails manicured.

  4. Wear simple jewelry and avoid any odor --positive (cologne) or negative

  5. Men: Wear a suit (or shirt, tie and nice slacks if a more casual environment), long-sleeved pressed shirt, a clean tie that touches your belt, knee-high socks (so bare legs do not show when crossed), and remove pens from shirt pockets. Shoes polished.

  6. Women:  A suit or business dress is most appropriate.  Avoid outfits cut low or too short or too sheer.  Hose in winter should match shoes or skirt, or be flesh-toned.  Use moderate makeup in a flattering shade, light nail polish and minimal jewelry. Sandals in summer with pedicure acceptable in some places.
