Resume Guide
When searching for the right candidate for a position, hiring managers examine many resumes. The following guidelines will help to ensure that your resume is selected. It identifies your skills and experiences, displays your drive and determination, and demonstrates a touch of class.
Resume Guidelines
- Proofread and have another proofread to ensure that NO misspelled words or typographical errors exist and the language is easily understood
- Offer a crisp, clean copy of the resume on a higher quality paper
- If at all possible, keep you resume to 1 page (2 pages maximum)
- Omit personal information i.e. marital status, hobbies or number of children.
- If you have college or trade school to list do not list high school.
- Never lie about your work history, gaps in employment or education as they are often verified by the prospective employer.
- Use “action” words such as created, organized, managed, negotiated and designed to show initiative
- Include phrases like: problem-solving ability, detail-oriented, self-directed, team player, enthusiastic, exceptional communication, solid organizational and presentation skills, especially in greeting the public.
- Design your resume to identify your skills that are in line with that specific job / industry. Avoid listing jobs lasting 90 days or less. Have 2-3 resumes.
- The hiring company looks for accomplishments, characteristics, communication and organizational skills.
- The cover letter should always emphasize “how” you can add value to the company rather than how the company can add value for you.
- You may briefly state in the cover letter why there are gaps in your employment or anything that you feel may appear as a “red flag” on your resume.
